Hot in the City

Yesterday was set to be the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures expected to hit 20 degrees/68F so I thought I’d take advantage of the lovely day by exploring the South St Seaport and Battery Park City at the tip of Manhattan. I had a really nice time, there were so many people around and everyone was really happy and I got fantastic views of Brooklyn and New Jersey as I walked around the coastline.

One thing I noticed though was just how hot it was, I mean, in the UK 20 degrees is pretty nice but in NYC yesterday it felt so much hotter than it actually was. I hear that New York City can be up to 10 degrees hotter than surrounding areas due to the heat getting trapped in the built up infarstructure of loads of metal and concrete…

And this got me thinking – this is just the beginning, with summer around the corner and temperatures apparently averaging about 30 degrees I’m wondering how I’m going to cope! Last night I heard some stories from some native New Yorker’s about apartment temperatures reaching 39C/102F, beds and sofas being too hot to sit on and flip flop soles melting due to the pavements being so hot!

As much as I am looking forward to summer, I’m not looking forward to the sweltering commute into town once I actually get a job! Oh well, at least it will give me another thing to moan about :)
